For a background, use mat medium to adhere a patterned paper of your choice. Allow to dry, then draw your text and/or design with pencil. Add color with watercolor, and details and outlining with black uniball pen.
First, draw your text in pencil on your paper. Then place washi tape (the transparent kind) over it. Next, cover the entire page with absorbent ground and allow to dry (overnight). Recreate the letters with watercolor. Allow to dry, then outline the letters with uniball gel pen. Add any other detail you want.
This is the very first page of my art journal, although I didn’t create it first. I always leave the first page blank, so I can come back and do it when I get an idea that works for me. It started out with a pencil sketch of a door, then watercolors for some color, and after that washi tape. I used the washi tape to actually help frame the door, which was not the original plan. Lastly, uniball gel pen was used for the lettering and other text. The title letters were colored in with neon paint pens. So lots of different media used on this page.
